COVID-19: Caring for the Caregivers

We are living through unprecedented times as the world reels from the COVID-19 pandemic. Frontline medical staff and healthcare teams in Westchester County, a virus epicenter, are working tirelessly in over-crowded facilities, often without adequate personal protective equipment, and with ongoing fear of exposure and the possibility of bringing home the virus to loved ones.

These caregivers are at risk. Ensuring their sustainability requires that we attend to both their physical needs for safety and protection, and their emotional and psychological needs for stability and security. Sequelae arising from COVID-19 are likely to be long lasting.

The American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) , a 501c3 organization, has responded to the needs of caregivers impacted by natural and manmade mass trauma for over 20 years. Your local affiliate, the Westchester Group Psychotherapy Society, in conjunction with AGPA, is prepared to intervene with Westchester, New York metropolitan, and lower Fairfield county hospitals and ancillary healthcare professionals to:

• Provide a wide variety of psychoeducational resources and materials, as well as specific group interventions that can be utilized to address stress, trauma and loss

•  Enlist a corps of seasoned volunteer psychotherapists to work directly with healthcare professionals affected by this pandemic

•  Conduct evidence-based research to assess the efficacy of our interventions
